Welcome to our LOTRO character creation guide—perfect for new players diving into The Lord of the Rings Online. After selecting your server, you’ll arrive at the character screen, where your journey truly begins. This step-by-step walkthrough will help you choose a race, class, and customize your hero before entering Middle-earth.
Step 1: Choose Your Server
Once you launch the game, you’ll be prompted to select a server. Pick one that suits your timezone or has a healthy player population. After that you’ll land on the Character Selection screen.
Step 2: Create a New Character
If you’ve never created a character before, click “New Character” in the bottom-left corner of the screen
Step 3: Race and Class
You’ll now see a list of available Races and Classes. For this guide we’ve chosen a Female Champion, but feel free to select whatever suits your playstyle.
💡N.B. If you’re following along with the “First Steps” guide, we recommend choosing the Race of Man for a smoother introduction.
Step 4: Customize Your Character
Now it’s time to personalise your hero:
- Origin: Choose your character’s homeland.
- Name: Pick a unique name that fits the lore or yourself.
- Appearance: Customize hair, body and facial features.
Once you’re happy with your selections, click “Create Character”
Step 5: Enter Middle-Earth
Your new character will now appear in your list. Make sure they’re highlighted, the click “Enter Middle-Earth” on the right-hand side of the screen.

Take your time exploring the customization options – LotRO is rich with lore and flavour. Your character is your gateway to adventure, so make them yours!
