The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO or LotRO) is a massively multiplayer online role-laying game (MMORPG) released for Windows on April 24, 2007. The game is developed by Standing Stone Games and is published by the Daybreak Game Company.

The game is set in J.R.R Tolkien’s Middle-Earth universe and takes place during The Lord of the Rings time frame.

The player can choose a character from eight races and eleven classes who are inspired by famous characters in the books such as Bilbo Baggins, Gimli and Elrond. The player is given tasks/missions by these in-game characters to assist Frodo Baggins in his quest and to upgrade their own character.

choosing a server

There are six LotRO servers to choose from. Three in the USA and 3 in Europe. They are as follows:

USA

Sting
Glamdring
Peregrin (US-RP)

Europe

Grond
Orcrist
Meriadoc (EU-RP)

RP server are recommended for anybody looking for role-play. These servers tend to have more player run events.

With this, more condensed, list of servers, finding one with players of varying levels is much easier.

When you are in a server, pressing the "O" key will bring up the Social window which will allow you to view players open to grouping. This can either show players of all levels and classes or can be filtered to show just players of your level or just a particular class.

Starting Out

If this is your first character, it is recommended to do the Tutorial. It provides your character with armour and weapons and allows you to get a feel for the class you have selected.

Once you have finished the Introduction, you will find yourself in the starter area for your race. These various starter areas will usually get you through to approximately level 15 where it is then suggested to head to Bree-land to continue levelling.
